Jazz music is a true American art form. By
the 1880's European
instruments and musical structure were being combined with African
rhythms and improvisation. Originating in New Orleans, Dixieland was one
of the early forms of Jazz.
As Jazz moved north in the 1920's it had returned to a more structured form as the
Big Band sound became popular. The Be Bop period followed and once again
improvisation found its way back into the music. Later Jazz styles included Latin
influences and elements of Rock and Roll.
The San Francisco Mainstream Jazz Quintet presents these elements of
Jazz history in a timeline
format that combines musical numbers performed by the quintet interleaved with
historical dialogue.
Students of all ages have enjoyed our program and have walked away
